The difference between...

We've been looking at the idea of difference or subtraction in maths this week.

In our writing, we've already been using plus + and equals = lots. This week we concentrated on ways the minus sign to show taking away or difference.

One way of reading these subtraction sentences is, "The difference between the yellow and the pink is the white."

Or we could say, "the yellow take away the white is the pink."

This one is exploring pairs of rods where there's the same difference:
The advantage of the Cuisenaire rods is that we can concentrate on the concept of subtraction, without the need for any counting, giving us time to really focus on the relationships. The children have been really good at this!
