Matilde shared some family photos with us:

Isobel's survey

Isobel conducted a survey and presented it to the class:

Wilbur's dad's childhood photos

Wilbur showed us photographs of his dad as a little boy. He also presented pictures of the toys his dad used to play with.

Ariadna went to the Château de Chenonceau. The kitchen was very old:

Things from the past

We went to Spain for the Christmas holiday and we have found the following things “from the past” in the house of Bianca’s grandma.
This fireplace is in the old kitchen that is no longer in use. More than 30 years ago it was used for cooking. Imagine it is empty in the middle, you would put some wood at the bottom on the floor and make some fire; over the fire you would put a cast iron cooking tripod on the top of which you put a cooking dish.

Nowadays, this traditional method of cooking has been replaced by this:
Another thing we found was a traditional  sweeping brush made of natural materials like hemp, anea grass and other easily available plants.
This one was made by Bianca’s great grandfather.

The difference between...

We've been looking at the idea of difference or subtraction in maths this week.

In our writing, we've already been using plus + and equals = lots. This week we concentrated on ways the minus sign to show taking away or difference.

One way of reading these subtraction sentences is, "The difference between the yellow and the pink is the white."

Or we could say, "the yellow take away the white is the pink."

This one is exploring pairs of rods where there's the same difference:
The advantage of the Cuisenaire rods is that we can concentrate on the concept of subtraction, without the need for any counting, giving us time to really focus on the relationships. The children have been really good at this!

An old old balance

Act 1

What a great way to help us learn about the past, bringing in your great-granddad's scales!

Watch this video:

What do you notice? What do you wonder?

Act 2

The scales are set to balance when the pan weights 50 grams. (That's 1¾ ounces.)
Just moving the weight for a moment, so you can see the 50:

How many pattern block squares would you estimate would balance the scales with the weight on 50 grams?

Act 3

Ethel and Ernest

We had a look at the beginning of the film of Ethel and Ernest, based on Raymond Briggs' book about his parents. Here they are getting rid of an old "range" so that they can put in a gas cooker:

We looked for other differences back then, more than 80 years ago.

Mr Tarr visits K3

In K3 our "central idea" now is: Artefacts and historical sources help us learn about the past.

Mr Tarr came to share an object he found when he was young - a "Codd bottle". He found it in a kind of stone igloo in the forest.
It's special because it has a glass marble in its neck:

Mr Tarr says that sometimes little boys would break the bottle just to get the marble!
He told us how he found the bottle:

He went to the library to find out about the bottle from books.
Then he made his own book:

Muffin the Mule

Elliot showed us pictures from his grandmother last week. One of them was of Muffin the Mule.
Catherine's grandmother had a Muffin the Mule too! And she brought it in today.
