Equals

The idea of "equals" is really important in maths, and good to get clear right from the start. It doesn't just mean "here comes the answer", it shows when two (or more) things are the same in some way.

The Gruffalo

A little brown mouse came to visit today, and a Gruffalo. They helped us read the story of the Gruffalo.

Baking Bread

In literacy this week, we've focused  on the story of The Little Red Hen. On Thursday, the children enjoyed making bread, like the little red hen, grinding and kneading the dough, baking it in the oven and finally eating it.

Which One Doesn't Belong?

One thing we do, to help us get good at sharing our reasoning clearly, is Which One Doesn't Belong?

We can choose any of the four pictures to be the one that doesn't belong, and we give the reason why we think it doesn't.

Which one do you think is different, and why? You could write your answer as a comment.

Here's some of the things that the two classes thought:

Sometimes we get a bit of a discussion going.
This time, KM said the bottom right one was a diamond rather than a square.
Some children thought is was still a square, but slanting or turned round.

We've been experimenting with filling square trays with Cuisenaire rods in different ways. There are so many interesting ways to do this, and it's great for getting to know the lengths of the different rods too!
