Measurements at home - K3G

There's been some great measuring going on at home!
 Taking our temperature:
 Weighing:
How much pressure in the bike tyres?
 Measuring out sugar:
 Using the tape measure:

Measuring how loud the music is (what great dancing!):

How much time is left?

Weighing:
 Measuring the height of books:
More weighing:
 And measuring head size!

Old and New Around Our Homes

This week we've looked at old and new household appliances and how they have changed over time. In groups, the children decided what was the same and different from one appliance from the past compared to one today. Their ideas were scribed by the teacher. Each group then had to present their findings to the class.

Measuring

We're looking at measurement in K3.

We've been measuring with all sorts of units. For instance, cubes:
and chain links:
Kapla blocks:
and stones

We're beginning to encounter standard units, and the reasons for using these. We're measuring our heights in cm for instance.

In class, we looked at a kettle, and how it measures the temperature. The children noticed lots of things about this:
a

and a speed camera:

It's always interesting to see what children notice about these things!

What other things for measuring do you have? We're asking if you can take a photograph or video to share with us.

Things from the past

Our new central idea is: "Artefacts and other historical sources help us learn about the past."

We've started off looking at this:
We all shared what we knew about it:
People have been bringing in some fascinating things too:
A wooden dumper truck that granddad made for dad
An old magnifying glass
A video cassette
A wooden flute from Romania
Weighing scales

An old colouring book
A cable car that belonged to granddad
The cable car in action:

A typewriter
Grandma's home-made "doudou"
Granddad's firefighting helmet
Another typewriter from granddad

An iron and a lattern from Papi

A camera

A teddy from grandmother

A doll from Grandma

A family tree dating back 4 generations

Pictures of several generations
And there's lots more!
