The SPA animal refuge

Today some of the Grade 11 students came to us.
They told us about a place that looks after cats and dogs, called Refuge SPA.

They got us decorating cakes, to raise money for the refuge.
What a lot of wonderful cakes!
Here we all are together:
And here's the cakes being sold at the end of the morning:

Cookie Cutter Shapes

When EH had his birthday he brought in some lovely brownies for the children in the class.
Children in K3G noticed various things about the icing shapes.

Then they looked at just four of them, and thought about which one doesn't belong:
EH's mum very kindly lent us the cookie cutters they'd used for making the shapes:
and said it would be OK if we used them with clay. So we rolled out clay.
(We used the wood to make sure the height of the clay was the same all over.)
We left it to dry for a little.
Then we though about how best to cut out the shapes:
And we got to cutting:
Next, we'll be heating the clay up really hot in the kiln at school. And if that works, we'll be painting them with glaze.

Watch this space!

Music

Children in K3 have been learning the names of some of the notes on the tuned percussion, and using their knowledge to perform a tune.

There's a pattern here:
C-C-C
D-D-D
E--D--C

Kindness

We watched this video about kindness together.

We've begun to think together about kind acts that we can do for each other.

Investigating 16 with Cuisenaire rods

After a long time exploring Cuisenaire rods using their colour letter names, we're now doing the same using the numbers, (for the moment) counting the white as 1, the red as 2, and so on.

We've been looking at ways of making the number 16:

Have a look at a slideshow of our work in class. Or see it as a movie:

We've been writing down the equations we've created:

Thanks also to BT who inspired us with some 16 work she did at home:

Well done to all the K3 students for learning their lines and speaking loud and clear in front of the whole primary school and the parents!

And thank you to the parents for coming to share the experience!

Here Come the Aliens!

Mr Gregg read us Here Come the Aliens! in the library today.
The bit we like best is about how the aliens speak:
Here's Mr Gregg reading that favourite page:

Our assembly

In our assembly we explored our How The World Works unit of inquiry, Survival.

We acted out two plays based on these two stories:

The Gigantic Turnip
Seeds, adapted from this Frog and Toad story:

We all introduced ourselves. You can meet us in these two books:

You can see an album of photos here.
